What qualifies

  • Clothing: $156 or less per item
  • Computers, software, and school computer supplies: $1,173 or less per purchase
  • School supplies and instructional materials: $78 or less per item
  • Books: Generally $47 or less; special textbook rules apply

Do online purchases count?

Qualifying remote purchases can receive the exemption when the transaction satisfies Alabama’s holiday rules. Confirm the retailer applies the correct destination tax treatment before checkout.

State and local tax treatment

Cities and counties must opt in. Check the Alabama Department of Revenue’s participating-localities list before assuming local tax is waived.

Important limitation
