2026 figures: SSA 2026 COLA fact sheet. 2027 amounts are our estimate: the 2026 amount raised by the COLA and rounded down to the dollar. SSA calculates from unrounded figures, so its official amounts can differ by $1.
Why the January payment comes in December
SSI is paid on the 1st of the month. When the 1st is a weekend or holiday, it’s paid the business day before. New Year’s Day moves the January 2027 payment to December 31, 2026. So December has two SSI payments and January has none. The December 31 payment is for January and includes the COLA.
How much your SSI goes up
SSI is the federal maximum minus your countable income. If your other income stays the same, your SSI rises by about the same dollar amount as the maximum.
If you also get Social Security, it’s different. SSI counts your Social Security as income, so when your Social Security gets its COLA raise, your SSI goes down by that amount, and then up by the increase in the maximum. Your combined total usually rises by about the same amount as someone on SSI alone. The calculator handles this if you choose “Both”.
Many states add a state supplement to SSI, and those amounts vary. The figures here are federal only.
