Social Security payment schedule for 2027

Most people get Social Security on the second, third or fourth Wednesday of the month, depending on their birthday. SSI is paid on the 1st. When a date falls on a weekend or federal holiday, the money comes on the business day before.

January 2027 comes early for some people

January 1, 2027 is a holiday and January 3 is a Sunday. So both the January SSI payment and the January Social Security payment for people paid on the 3rd arrive on Thursday, December 31, 2026. It’s your January payment arriving early, not an extra one, so budget for it to last through January.

Dates shaded in the table fall in the month before the payment they cover, because the usual date is a weekend or federal holiday.

These dates follow SSA’s published rules; the Wednesday dates match SSA’s printed 2027 payment schedule. Allow three extra mailing days if you get a paper check.

Birthday on the 1st to 10th: second Wednesday
Birthday on the 11th to 20th: third Wednesday
Birthday on the 21st to 31st: fourth Wednesday
Started Social Security before May 1997, or get both Social Security and SSI: the 3rd of the month
SSI: the 1st of the month

If you get benefits on someone else’s record, such as a spouse’s or a parent’s, the date depends on their birthday, not yours.

Dates that move in 2027

SSI for January: Thursday, December 31, 2026
SSI for May: Friday, April 30 (May 1 is a Saturday)
SSI for August: Friday, July 30 (August 1 is a Sunday)
SSI for January 2028: Thursday, December 30, 2027 (January 1, 2028 is a Saturday, and the holiday is observed on Friday, December 31)
The 3rd-of-month group: moves in January (to December 31), April (to Friday, April 2), July (to Friday, July 2) and October (to Friday, October 1)

Because of these shifts, some months have two SSI payments and some have none. That’s normal and doesn’t change the total you get for the year.

Late or missing payment?

SSA asks people to wait three mailing days before reporting a missing payment. Then call SSA at 1-800-772-1213 or check your my Social Security account. We can’t look up individual payments.
