What it does to your deposit
Your January deposit is your new benefit minus the new premium. With a premium change of +$6.60 and a 3.6% COLA, anyone whose benefit is at least $195 a month before deductions gets a raise that covers the premium increase. Most people come out ahead.
| December 2026 | January 2027 | |
|---|---|---|
| Benefit before deductions | $1,200.00 | $1,243.00 |
| Part B premium taken out | −$202.90 | −$209.50 |
| Deposit | $997.10 | $1,033.50 |
Where people feel it most is when the COLA is small and the premium jump is large, as in 2026, when the premium rose $17.90 against a 2.8% COLA. Check your own numbers.
Who pays a different amount
- Higher incomes pay the standard premium plus an income-related monthly adjustment amount (IRMAA). In 2026 that starts above $109,000 of income for a single filer or $218,000 for a joint return. IRMAA tiers and appeals.
- People with Medicaid or a Medicare Savings Program usually have their state pay the premium, so the premium doesn’t come out of their check at all.
- People protected by hold harmless pay less than the standard premium if their COLA raise is smaller than the premium increase. How that works.
- People who signed up late can owe a lifetime late-enrollment penalty on top of the premium.
When the official number comes out
CMS usually announces the next year’s Part B premium, deductible and IRMAA amounts in November. SSA uses them for the deductions shown on your COLA notice. When the 2027 premium is announced, this page and the calculator update the same day, and the change is recorded on our Sources page.
Medicare open enrollment is separate
Open enrollment runs October 15 to December 7. It’s when you can change Medicare Advantage and Part D drug plans for 2027. It doesn’t change the Part B premium, but a new Part D or Advantage plan premium can change what comes out of your check.
